There are several different ways that Chiaogoo interchangeable cables and needle tips are measured: Size (M, S, L); cable length (eg 75cm, 100cm); needle thickness (eg 4mm, 4.5mm); and needle tip length (8cm, 10cm, 13cm). Needle thickness is the same as any other knitting needles - thinner needles are used on thinner yarns, thicker needles are for thicker yarns (with some exceptions for particular effects or types of yarn).

Both needles and cables come in three sizes: Mini (M), Small (S), and Large (L). Mini is the smallest, and Large is the largest. These sizes refer to the thickness of the connector, the cable, and the tips that go with it. Thinner tips go on Mini cables, medium sized tips go on Small cables, and thicker tips go on Large cables. There are adaptors available that can connect a smaller cable to a larger tip, but they cannot go the other way as the connector would be thicker than the tip and it would snag.

The listed length of Chiaogoo cables is approximately the length of the cable without tips attached, so the total length with tips will be longer than what it says on the packet. Longer tips (13cm) can be more comfortable to use when knitting a larger piece such as the body of a jersey, while shorter tips (8cm) are useful for smaller circles such as sleeves and collars.
